This train is bound for glory

"Well, it's a party." - Country Winston

It really was. OCMS, ES&TMZ, M&S. Pretty much one of the best shows I've ever seen.

Old Crow Medicine Show started it off strong. A little Cocaine and Wagon Wheel got my feet tappin'. There was a darling group close by blowing bubbles. "Bubbles and a brass band. It doesn't get much better." - Mark Bellows

Next up was Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros. I was pretty jazzed about seeing them live. Disappointment set in when I saw how loaded Alexander and Jane were. She could barely sing at all. Alexander kept it together well enough, but he did say that Mexico City has better food than New Orleans. He was obviously high to say something so ludicrous. 40 days was fabulous, though.

There was NO disappointment in Mumford and Sons. At the cost of speaking sacrilege - it was almost spiritual. I can't pick out a particular peak because it was all so perfect. They sang strong and performed big. And I loved every minute of it!

"Our train ended here for a reason."

Take it all in

It's only Tuesday and it seems like tomorrow is the weekend. I totally feel like a kid on Christmas Eve. Except I'm a twenty-something on Railroad Revival Tour Eve. Not quite sure I am adequately prepared for this show - mentally, physically, emotionally, sleep-readily. For some reason I've developed a new habit of staying up until 11 or later. This isn't conducive to good work habits since I get up at 5:30. And yet, here I am. Still awake. Hopefully I'll pass out before 11:30 and get a good 6 hours in.
Also, there's only been 1 episode of The Voice, and I'm hooked. It's interesting to see people being judged solely on their voice. And who doesn't love Adam Levine, Cee Lo Green, Christina Aguilera, and Blake Shelton?! What an awesome group of judges!
In an unrelated note - I got an email from Deni tonight. She said "the shower Saturday is for ME!!! after 4 yrs it's almost unbelievable!" I am so excited for my sister. I hope her shower(s) are absolutely perfect. There's a lot of driving coming up, but I wouldn't miss this for the world.

Rare as rocking horse poo

I had the best Walmart experience ever today.
Found a good parking spot next to the garden center.
Got a buggy that wasn't jacked up.
There was hardly any people in the store.
I got almost everything on my list.
My checkout lady was very pleasant.
When I handed my receipt to the lady at the garden center door she told me "Have a blessed day." And I told her the same. Then in her broken English she told me "I am ready when it is time to go home." She was so cute. I got a ton of stuff and was there and back in an hour.
Very rare.

Success

Three family Easter celebrations
One baby shower
One wonderful church service
The weekend trips are never long enough. It seems like just when I'm getting comfortable it's time to hit the road back to New Orleans. I can't say that I'm not happy down here, but I definitely miss home. I'll be hitting the roads two more times in the next three weeks. It's time to celebrate Cala's arrival!! Matt and I got to watch the 4D video they shot on Thursday. Cala said "Please, no photos." She kept rolling over to hide her face, and the doctor kept shaking Deni's belly. She looked like an alien sometimes, but it was really cool. Especially when she smiled at us. Hopefully sometime soon I'll get to feel her kick!
Bake Cala, bake! We want you well done!!

Painful fingers

According to Matt I was not adequately focused and prepared for the Easter crawfish boil. I made the cardinal sin and got a nasty cut on my main peeling thumb. We had a big salad for dinner Wednesday night, and I caught the end of it while chopping tomatoes. No bueno. It was healing pretty nicely until I mutilated it digging into the lobster crawfish that Papa Dan snagged for us. They were delicious and demolished by the large crowd we had this year. I really love getting to spend time with friends and family that we don't see all the time. An added bonus - we all got chocolate Big Ear Bunnies this year - big hit!!
I have to go to bed now so that the Easter Bunny doesn't skip my house!

It's Friday

But Sunday's coming!!

I didn't go to the Good Friday service today, but the message a couple of years ago really stuck with me. It's one of the most positive and uplifting things that I can ever think. Yes, Christ has died. It my seem like the most horrible thing that could ever happen. But don't worry. This won't last. Something good is in store. Sunday's coming!!!

Truly thank God for Sunday.

Short Falls and Little Sins

I know that it's technically Friday, but I haven't gone to sleep yet. So it's still Thursday in my mind.
We have made it to Shreveport. My teeth are brushed. My contacts are out. And me and Ellis are in bed. Hallelujah!
Bit of advice. Do NOT stop at the Taco Bell/KFC on 415 right outside of BR. We probably would have gotten here 30 minutes sooner if we'd gone to Burger King.
My phone started ringing about 10 minutes ago while I was brushing my teeth. Matt was unloading the car and told me to come outside. There was an armadillo right outside the door in the flowerbed! We looked at it a little while and then scared it away. It was digging up stuff!
Now my eyes are drooping and Ellis is wishing that I would turn the light off.

Tired

Somehow I made 100+ posts without even realizing. I feel this is some sort of accomplishment. I think I'll celebrate.
I'm really ready for Friday. This work week has been non-stop. I'm worn out. And I still have a 10 hour day tomorrow. I can't seem to get caught up or organized, and I HATE being unorganized. I'm hopeful that tomorrow will be way productive, and I'll be able to leave for Shreveport feeling at ease.
I'm ready for home. Easter with the St. Claires. Baby shower for Shawn. Crawfish boil with the Beaubouefs. Easter with the Reids. And we're bringing Mark back to NOLA with us. It should be a great few days. I'm also hoping to get to meet Mr. Whittington Lary if there's some free time.
Today brought good news. Caitlin's dad got a new job which is a huge blessing. And Deni & Sean met with their new(er) lawyer about WT. Deni said he seems passionate and committed to their case and keeping WT in jail for a long long time. I love good news!

Waitie Katie

Apparently there are a fair amount of Americans that are genuinely obsessed with Kate Middleton and Prince William. Tonight I watched William & Kate a Lifetime made-for-TV-movie at a friend's house. I can't say that I have become one of the obsessed, but I enjoyed it. The cheese factor was relatively low, and TV Prince William was much much more attractive than real life Prince William. (It's odd how much Wills has grown less attractive over the last few years.) There was even a moment that I almost felt sorry for poor Kate for all of the paparazzi following her. Then I remembered that she's marrying an actual prince next week and I lost all pity.
I highly doubt I will be taking vacation to spend next Friday in front of my TV to watch the royal wedding, but I look forward to seeing pictures all over the news stands Saturday morning.
And because I'm sure you were dying to know - for dinner we had roast and potatoes which happen to be among the prince's favorite.

Garfield or A-Rod

In my next life I want to be a house cat.

Cat owners have very low expectations. As a dog owner I expect Ellis to bark and alert me to an intruder. I expect her to walk on a leash. I expect her to be courteous to visitors (which she mostly isn't). I expect her not to potty in the house. I expect her never to bite Matt, no matter how rough he is playing with her. I expect her to follow commands - sit, stay, here. Most people expect their dogs to do tricks.
But seriously - what do you expect of your cat. I expect Walter to use the litter box. And I didn't even have to train him to do that. Cats just know that's what the box is for. That's pretty much my only expectation for him. He just lazes around all day. He doesn't have to work or hunt for food. He doesn't have to wait for someone to take him outside to potty. He has people who love to pet him and play with him and his toys. He lives the life that we all hope to have when we are old and retired. Do what we want, when we want, and have other people feed us.

Either that or I'd like to be a professional (I'm talking Major Leage) baseball player. No salary cap and endorsements? I'll take it.

50 Bottles of Maalox

I finally introduced myself to Extreme Couponing on TLC. I understand the point of buying a lot due to great prices. But it doesn't make sense to buy things just because you have coupons. Also, these people have 70 boxes of cereal (and not Kashi or Fiber Plus) or 45 bags of chips. That is not healthy! Matt and I watched 2 episodes that showed 4 coupon ladies. Only one of them seemed to not be a complete waste. She made monthly meal plans and got food based on what she was cooking. She bought something like 50 yogurts, but she explained that her 6 person family goes through about 20 a week. So it was a good purchase. Another lady bought 62 bottles of mustard. And her husband doesn't even eat mustard. That's just retarded. It definitely appeared that she was buying just to be extreme. They also said that she was in the grocery store for 5 hours. I bet she could have been at work making more money than she was saving for those 5 hours!
The show has definitely inspired me to look closer and try to get better deals with my shopping. But I will never store bulk bottles of barbecue sauce under my child's bed.

Hurricanes and Hand Grenades

In 99.9 percent of the world hurricanes and hand grenades are terrifying and lethal words. Here in the Big Easy these words are synonymous with good times and loose lips.
Matt and I don't do typical "New Orleans" things until someone comes in town. Visitors always want to go to the city. So today we enjoyed our little town. This morning we visited the Crescent City Farmers Market. This evening we had charbroiled oysters at Drago's. Then we had our once-in-a-lifetime experience watching two live filmings of The Wheel. Tonight we taxied from the Convention Center to Bourbon Street. Dad bought me a hand grenade and we enjoyed a little drink and live music in some bar that dad enjoys. It was a pleasant little day.

(It has come to my attention that my Thursday post somehow has Wednesday as the post date. But I actually put in entries on Wednesday and Thursday. I'm sad that it does not appear that way.)

Service with a smile

There's a little restaurant down the street from my apt that Matt and I tried out shortly after we moved here. It's called Hickory Cafe & Grill. Their main business is catering, so they are only open Monday - Friday for lunch. They have sandwiches and salads and daily specials. The ingredients are all so fresh and so tasty! If I worked close, or not at all, I would go there all the time. But not only because of the great food. Also because of the girl that works there. The first time Matt and I went we had a coupon. We use them a lot to go out to eat and try new places and most times you can tell that the waiter is kindof pissed about it. This lady almost seemed like she was happy that we were able to save money! She wasn't rude or condescending. She was actually so very friendly and efficient. And she's there every time. And if you call in an order, she answers the phone. In a town, and world really, where no one expects good customer service anymore, this lady is a dying breed. And she's young, maybe early 30's. I always seem in a better mood when I walk out of there. Partially because of the Cuban on toasted French bread and partially because of the exceptional service that I always get. If I could give her a gold star, I would.

I'm now paranoid

Spring cleaning has started in the Beautiful Beef household. It actually started yesterday. While bored in class I got an email from Real Simple with spring cleaning tips. I thought about the last time the apt really got a good scrubbin' and was immediately embarrassed. I made a detailed list of all the cleaning tasks that were beyond necessary. It was a whole page. When I got home yesterday I jumped right in. It's a daunting task, but there's no way I'm letting my mom see all this dust!
Class today was split between two different lady instructors. Ms. Instructor #1 was a former verbatim court reporter in the Marine Corps. She explained that she had a mask thing over her mouth and had to repeat everything that was said in the courtroom. The normal person speaks a little over 200 words per minute. She, at one time, was speaking 300 WPM. Her deliverance was fast, forward, and almost harsh. She knew more about privacy/cyber liability than I even knew existed. She came up with insanely scary claim scenarios. She could be seriously dangerous if anyone ever made her mad. She was no frills, little make-up, and wicked smart. I liked her.
Ms. Instructor #2 reminded me of a younger, more business-y Paula Deen and looked like a blonde Katey Sagal. Nice southern accent, and enunciated her words. Suggests a bottle of wine when reading certain judge rulings or insurance documents. Knows how to use a teasing comb and hairspray. Talked about her grandma. Liked to pat people's shoulders when she was excited, said "honey," and give that big mouth, almost sarcastic smile when she called on someone with a question. She had 7 sets of designation letters after her name. I liked her, too.
Between these two ladies I am now terrified to use computers and credit cards, do any managerial or HR work, own a company, have any title at a company, sell insurance, work at an agency at all, work under a manager or at company that has an HR person who handles benefits, go to a foreign country, have a job, live among strangers, breath...

J. K. Ruble

I'm not sure who this guy is, but I bet he didn't have to sit through 8 hours of discussion on Directors & Officers Liability Insurance. So I don't think he should make me. Here's what I learned today:
1. Don't ever serve on a Board of Directors. Even your HOA. Especially not for a bank. Just don't do it.
2. "If 'ifs' and 'buts' were candy and nuts we'd have Christmas all year long." - some Marquette basketball coach. Not sure the relevance, but I liked it.
3. Chartis & Chubb are the "cat's meow" in D&O carriers. Instructor used this phrase at least twice.
4. My phone battery does not last for a whole 8 hour class. Luckily there's a lunch break designed for recharging.
5. Mai Tai Chinese Restaurant on Vets is tasty, fast, and cheap. And they put lots of veggies in their vegetable fries rice!
6. It doesn't matter how many times it's requested in every CE class everywhere, the hotels are NOT going to make the rooms warmer.
7. 10oz bottles are cute and the perfect amount of Diet Coke

Celebrate living

**Matt just told me that I haven't blogged tonight. Little did he know that the below draft was already started and saved to finish when I got in bed. He said he just wanted to make sure I didn't forget. Sweet husband. **

I wish I could say that I'm looking forward to the next three days of class for my annual CIC update. But, I'm afraid this class is going to be particularly boring. Executive Risk. Just typing it wears out the battery on my distraction piece - iPhone. Maybe I'll read a couple of free downloaded books on my free downloaded kindle app. Hello my name is Rene and I don't like to spend money unnecessarily. Unless it's on tasty grapes. Or wine made out of tasty grapes. Or Amy Butler fat quarters on eBay. I have plans.
Tonight was my first night of Pantry Raid. See challenge details below.

I made my own hamburger helper. Me, Matt, and Emily all liked it. I can't say that I was terribly experimental or edgy with my meal, but it was tasty, followed the rules, and didn't take a long time. Success.
I liked my horoscope today. Here are my favorite parts - "Don't hesitate to zero in on what you want." "Celebrate living."

(And I don't know how to rotate pictures inserted from my phone.)

Oh man is a giddy thing

I have so much to look forward to over the next few weeks. But right now all I can think of is:
Old Crow Medicine Show + Mumford and Sons + Edward Sharp & the Magnetic Zeros = Railroad Revival Tour!!It's interesting how you marry into a family and some people feel like in-laws and others feel like they've been a part of your family all along. I am very lucky to have married into Matt's family. Our cousin Mark is one blessing that I have gained from this union. I can't wait for him to come spend a few days in New Orleans after Easter.
Two Railroad Revival tickets purchased. I'm so pumped to get to see Mumford and Sons again. Mark is educating me on the North Carolina bluegrass jam band, Old Crow Medicine Show. I'll be humming the likes of Wagon Wheel in my sleep soon enough. And who doesn't love a little "Well, hot & heavy, pumpkin pie."

Moats and Boats and Waterfalls

What did I do today? Let's see... Rode in the car 9 hours. Here are the highlights:
- meeting Deni at the Tyler exit. Happy to pick up my sweet puppy, see Miss O'Hara who came along for the ride, and of course, see my fav sister!
- pit stop at DQ on Pines Rd. Gotta love a chicken strip basket and Blizzard!
- Matt always puts a pillow on the middle console to cushion his elbow. Ellis sleeps in my lap during car rides. A lot of times she rests her head on the previously mentioned pillow. Well, I guess she just wasn't feeling it today. She got up and went to the back for a few minutes. Then she half climbed to the front seat.

She put her head and upper body on the pillow between our seats.

Her butt was resting on the back seat. I figured she'd stay there a few minutes. A few hours later I made her move back to sit with me. Never underestimate how long your dog can sleep in a seemingly uncomfortable position.
- about 2/3 of the way down 190 to Baton Rouge there was a wreck and traffic was redirected down some windy, country road.

Everyone followed everyone else assuming we'd jump back on 190 eventually. At one point some cars went left and some kept going straight. We followed the crowd going straight.

Turns out the first vehicle going straight was a white truck that turned off of the road into his driveway. Guess we shouldn't have followed him after all. Thank God for google maps and 3G. Keep going straight and turn left when the road dead ends. Whew! Back on track.
- Home sweet home and Comedy Central awards show!!

Turtles

One day recently Emily and I wanted to go out to lunch. So I asked her to pick somewhere. She emailed me a list of 4 places and I chose P & G Restaurant on Baronne. Yelp and Urban Spoon both had reviews about how great the shrimp poboys are. So we both ordered one and picked a table in the back of the cafeteria-style restaurant near the window. Turns out this was no ordinary window.

It was one of the walls to a huge turtle courtyard home. The ceiling was open to the elements and three walls were windows. It was seriously one of the oddest things I've ever seen in my life. There is no sign of the reptile sanctuary from the street. And until you sit close and notice things moving, you have no idea it's anything more than pretty courtyard. But alas there are a LOT of turtles!

So our lunch turned more interesting quick. It turned quite strange when they were all mounting each other! It was something straight out of domestic poboy shop national geographic, turtle porn edition. We even had the token perv who was peering over some bricks watching the action.
I'm not sure if the food was worth a return visit, but Brokeback Turtle may have been.

Homemade Birthday

Continuing with one of my 2011 goals to give homemade gifts, I gave these to Deni today:

I sewed this eye cover. The back is chenille - very soft.

I made these bright, summery pillows for her to set out by the pool.

And, of course, she had to have a cake. I baked her a cream cheese king cake with rainbow sprinkles.

I think she liked them! I just wish I could have spent more than a couple of hours with her. It definitely wasn't long enough.

No one would want to watch my reality show

Emily and I have realized how uninteresting a show about our lives would be. Also how ridiculous it is that there's another freaking Kardashian show starting soon. Seriously - who cares about these girls?? There is no way I could ever understand. Give me a reality show that follows Zach Braff or Tracy Morgan or Jake Gyllenhaal or all three in one show. That's something I would watch. And in case you were thinking about making a crepe and topping it with Nutella, Reese's cup crumbles, and banana slices - you definitely should do it. Word on the street is that mess is good. Turns out I'm not a huge fan of the Sweet Red Funf, though. I'll just stick to the Riesling. It's cheaper anyway.
At 7:25 this morning I remembered why I love technology so much. Jen texted me a short little video of Elise and said that she was just all smiles this morning and had to share. Living so far away from my nieces is the pits, but at least I can get awesome updates like these. I fully expect (and request) to receive daily picture texts from Deni when Cala arrives. "Look what I'm wearing right now." "Look at how cute I am when I sleep." "Look at how much my furry sisters and brothers love me." And so on. I can't wait!
Tomorrow we hit the road for Shreveport/Fort Worth. I'm looking forward to this trip even with the 20ish hours we'll be driving over the course of the weekend.

Thunderous

I didn't sleep well last night, so today was a bit of a drag, literally. But right off the bat it was better than yesterday. Emily brought me a cookie that she got at Julie Ann's this weekend.

I'm not sure that was the original intent of the cookie, but she saw a friend in need.
We had a bit of a moment around lunch today when this popped up on twitter:
Day off in New Orleans. I love you tour.
Emily and I had a short conference and decided that a tweet was necessary. Que:
@ WHERE Y'AT?
We almost peed our pants to see response:
@ coffee in marigny. Off to find and epic oyster po-boy.
I did some quick research to verify that the Verti Mart has reopened. And Emily replied with:
@ I know just the place. And noon-ish works for me.
The refresh button was worn out on both of our phones. But to no avail. Guster did not respond with a grand invitation for us (or Emily, but of course I would go, too) to join them for lunch. It was pretty disappointing. It's amazing how the two of us can get so pumped up about something that will never happen.
No casualties or traumas today. It was good.
And I made this for my brother-in-law.

(Sorry it's sideways.)
His birthday was March 13th, but I didn't get to see him. So I'm surprising him with a cake. I'm not going to tell him that it's not yellow with chocolate icing like always - it's peanut butter!! Surprise!
2 more days and then I get to get my hair done and see my sister! Hooray Friday!!!

Cause you had a bad day

Power's out and I've had a little 'nilla rum and diet coke.
I figure if I share all the good and funny, then I should share the horrible and awful, too. Had a decent day at work. Nothing great, and nothing horrible. Until my ride home from work. It was misting a little bit. The storm that knocked out the electricity wasn't quite here yet. I was driving on Earhart Expressway going about 60 mph. I saw something just ahead right in the middle of my lane (far left of three). Looked like a black bag swaying in the weather. I didn't want to make an unwise decision and quickly swerve into the next lane with cars all around and it wasn't very big. I made a quick judgement call and decided to straddle the "bag". What came next shook me so hard that I couldn't really function for the next hour and a half. That "bag" was nothing of the sort. It was a mama duck and her ducklings. And I ran over them. I type this knowing the judgement that will surely come. It was a horrible moment. I cried. Got home and cried and cried and cried. Matt held me and told me everything would be ok. And that these things happen. I proceeded to cry and tell him that it was definitely NOT ok. Finally I washed the mascara away and removed the bunched up contacts from my eyes. I lay on the couch holding Ellis until the timer went off for the lasagna that Matt put in the oven. Matt made me get up. And he made me a drink. I think it was a good idea. When we blessed our food I prayed for the little duck family and cried some more. Now the power is out. All of our candles are lite and I want ice cream. It's been a bad day.

Or why I should have written the dictionary

Eaten. Why aren't there two t's in that word?
Fat - Fatten
Rot - Rotten
Got - Gotten
Eat - Eatten or it should be!

Living in New Orleans I pretty much only get coffee from CC's. Occasionally I'll hit up PJ's. But today I remembered how much I love an Iced Caramel Macchiato from Starbucks. I still definitely prefer CC's and PJ's coffee to Starbucks. But that little iced espresso number is so nice!

If I were rich I would grocery shop at Dorignac's. Full bakery. Full liquor store. Fresh seafood and meat. Lots of cheeses. Little restaurant with local dishes. Not busy with crazy folks trying to save money. Just a lot of amiable people getting some groceries. It's a happy place.

Tonight was an improv type of dinner. I had some leftover green onions and parsley from dinner last night and broccoli from lunch today. I grabbed a broccoli alfredo 8 minute pasta pack out of the pantry. Boiled some chicken and added some balsamic when it was pretty much done. Cooked the pasta pack according to the directions, but used water from the boiled chicken instead of from the sink. Chopped the green onion and sauteed in a skillet with butter and minced garlic. Added the cooked pasta to the skillet. Added the chopped, cooked chicken. Added some monterey jack cheese and the chopped parsley. Tada! It was tasty, easy, and used things that I already had a home.

We are the outsiders

I almost feel like I've been sleepy all day. Also, I haven't showered today. I have high hopes for tomorrow! Actually, today was pretty productive. Started and finished a craft project. I can't post pictures or give details, though, because it's for my sister's birthday. And she's one of the only people who regularly reads this. I will say that I used my sewing machine a lot. I'm becoming quite the seamstress. Still don't think I'm ready to put that button back on Matt's shirt yet though... So the problem with doing a project start to finish in one day is that dinner doesn't end up ready until 9:00. After we ate Matt told me it was well worth the wait! I made Gnocchi with Zucchini Ribbons & Parsley Brown Butter from EatingWell, an app on my phone. Please note that I am not a Top Chef, so my gnocchi came from a box. Still quite tasty.
I'll post pictures of my craft after I give it to Deni next week. I'm pretty ready to see her. I feel like it's been forever. And it has been since early February. This living so far away thing is for the birds. Good thing I'll see her a lot in the next two months. Not such a good thing for my car.
Oh my goodness! I got the BEST news today! The Wheel is coming to New Orleans and I got four tickets!! I've been waiting for weeks to see if my request for tickets would be granted. And guess what was in the mail today! I immediately called my dad to tell him the great news and tell him that I had two extra tickets with his name on them. He was just as excited as I knew he would be. I can't believe I actually get to go see Pat and Vanna! Going to be a big moment in my life.

Beefence!

Date Night ala Beaubouef:

1. Early dinner at Port of Call. Burgers, a fruity drink for me, and a coke for Matt so that we could get the cup. It was so tasty and not greasy! We found a parking spot super close and didn't even have to wait. We walked right across the street to the restaurant and right inside to our table. It was great!

2. Hornets vs. Grizzles. Pretty pathetic game. Hornets couldn't play and the zebras were extremely one sided (not ours). But! Matt and I got to experience the game completely different than we're used to. One of the men in my office hooked me up with tickets. When he gave them to me he said they are his son's tickets, and he doesn't know how great the seats were. I told him our seats are always up against the wall, so anything will be better than that. Turns out they were on the 11th row! It was awesome. You try to tell yourself that it's just as good sitting up high. Well, it's not. There is so much more to see. And it's way easier to see all the crap calls the refs make and miss. Mr. West was not in the building...
3. Bedtime. Matt is making me get up at 6:30 to take the car to get the tires balanced and rotated, the oil changed, and something about the air conditioner. At least I'll get my day started. Maybe I'll get something accomplished!
